Oz the Great and Powerful is Disney's attempt to re-imagine the origins of the major characters in the classic children's novel. (Is it just me, or is there just more and more origins and reboots recently? The last two X-Men movies… The Hobbit… Amazing Spider-Man… Three Stooges… Dredd… Oh well…)
Anyway, after decades worth of adaptations, this is the first one in recent memory -- or perhaps ever --that focuses on, well, the Wizard of Oz himself. This I find really odd. With "Wizard" in the title of the novels, films, and shows, you'd think that the wizard will be the star of the story. But no, that's not the case. Despite the namesake, he is playing second banana to Dorothy and, as in the case of the musical Wicked, to the witches.
Well, this movie changes that I guess. Oscar Diggs, small-time circus magician and future Wizard of Oz, is right there, front and center. It's a fresh take on a classic, and a good one at that. With the star-studded cast, and veteran storytellers at the helm, this one promises to be a great film to watch.
The greatest WWE Diva of all time returns and takes Heath Slaters challenge in a No Disqualification, No Countout match. And she brought with her perhaps the most bad-ass beer-drinking tag team of all time.
Here's a quick rundown:
Lita defeats Heath Slater in a No Disqualification, No Countout match
- Howard Finkel (Special Guest Announcer)
- Heath Slater vs Lita with APA (Bradshaw, Ron Simmons)
- Road Warrior Animal, Vader, Doink the Clown, Sycho Sid, DDP, Sgt Salughter, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Bob Backlund, Rikishi.
I guess I've been really holed up for a really long time. I just heard of the live action Rurouni Kenshin a few days ago. I'm shamed! :) But happy as well. It's about time that they made a movie.
Not many people know this, but I really don't like Pororo the Little Penguin shown in Disney Junior (formerly Playhouse Disney). However, I do like the musicals, which I guess is the big draw here. (Great; now I'm using wrestling slang for a show/parenting-related post.)
I have some hesitations about posting this online and I'm going back and forth as to whether I should proceed or not -- Pororo's a very popular character, and I haven't met anyone yet who doesn't like the character. But, I guess I have to say my piece sooner than later, so I just finally went ahead and posted it.
The Bad: The "Moral" Story Episodes
I've watched several episodes and to be honest I find them quite disturbing.
Case in point: the "Let's Play Together" episode (Season 1 Episode 11). This is the very first episode I've seen and it has caused me to worry about this show since. Here's the summary (from the tvdb.com):
Pororo was playing on the swing. When Eddy came and asked him for one ride, Pororo ignored him and didn’t let him ride it. Eddy trying to persuade Pororo to come off the swing and Pororo resisting, they both hear their friends having a good time. Looking over, they find Loopy, Crong, and Poby having a wonderful time on the swing taking turns…
In light of the upcoming release of iPhone 5 and iPad 3 in the next few months, I was reminded of a couple of sketches from Conan. They are taking stabs on Apple and is meant to be funny... although there is a little ring of truth in it.
Have been on the sidelines for a while now; just one of those times again when you're way over your head. Just got a downtime and I was watching the usual feeds then this morning then BAM! I saw the headline: George Takei Saves Conan's Ass.
George Takei played Sulu in the original Star Trek series back in the 60s. Just not sure how the Trekkies will react to this. :))
It's probably one of Conan's best Fan Corrections edition yet. :)) This segement aired on the August 15, 2011 episode of Conan.
Conan was invited to deliver the 2011 Commencement Speech at Dartmouth College. One of the very few commencement speeches in which you get good laughs and good pieces of advise as well. :)
Biggest news of the day: President Obama announced that the Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is finally killed. The 10-year manhunt ended with a CIA-led operation in Pakistan taking out the Al Qaeda leader who masterminded the 9/11 attacks a decade ago.
I first heard this when I was listening to the House M.D. OST. Can't help myself remembering our heartaches last year...
Waiting On An Angel
Ben Harper
Waiting on an angel
One to carry me home
Hope you come to see me soon
Cause I don' t want to go alone
I don' t want to go alone
Now angel won' t you come by me
Angel hear my plea
Take my hand lift me up
So that I can fly with thee
So that I can fly with thee
And I'm waiting on an angel
And I know it won' t be long
To find myself a resting place
In my angel's arms
In my angel's arms
So speak kind to a stranger
Cause you'll never know
It just might be an angel come
Knockin' at your door
Knockin' at your door
And I'm waiting on an angel
And I know it won't be long
To find myself a resting place
In my angel's arms
In my angel's arms
Waiting on an angel
One to carry me home
Hope you come and see me soon
Cause I don' t want to go alone
I don't want to go alone
Don' t want to go
I don't want to go alone
In case you you want to watch Cory's funeral procession, you can watch it live on streaming.
You can go to http://www.coryaquino.ph/ then click on the Live Video Streaming Link. It's actually the ANC video playlist. Just download and play it and you're good to go.
August 5, 2009 4:30 PM - Just woke up because I was on night shift. I arrived home earlier today around 9:00 AM and saw the last funeral service for Cory in Manila Cathedral. I knew it was impossible for me to be awake the entire time, but I just left the TV on while I drifted to sleep. At 4:30 PM, waking up, I'm surprised with what I saw on TV... the Sucat Road exit from highway is quite literally a sea of people. The only landmark you can see that isn't covered by people was the pedestrian overpass!
I confirmed from home (I just called my dad a few minutes earlier) that what I'm seeing from TFC was really a live-telecast. According to dad, Cory Aquino's funeral procession just passed by the Nichol's Exit along the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX). That's still quite a long way to go. Still several kilometers before Bicutan then the Sucat exit. Then from the Sucat exit, it's several more kilometers before Manila Memorial Park. The TFC news crew estimate that it would take around two more hours before it reaches the Memorial Park. Wish I could be with my dad and the rest of the family who would be going to Sucat later once the procession passes by...
I actually though that once the procession reached SLEX, it will go full speed ahead towards Sucat. Not the case this time. Anyway...
It's just jaw-dropping to see the literal sea of people showing their love for the former president. The great respect the Philippine's Icon of Democracy draws is just unparalleled. Amazing. I almost cried at the mere thought, much less the sight of it all...
Anyway, allow me my little indulgence. This song has been playing all the time, but I never knew the lyrics:
"Handog ng Pilipino sa Mundo"
'Di na 'ko papayag mawala ka muli. 'Di na 'ko papayag na muli mabawi, Ating kalayaan kay tagal natin mithi. 'Di na papayagang mabawi muli.
Magkakapit-bisig libo-libong tao. Kay sarap palang maging Pilipino. Sama-sama iisa ang adhikain. Kelan man 'di na paalipin.
Ref: Handog ng Pilipino sa mundo, Mapayapang paraang pagbabago. Katotohanan, kalayaan, katarungan Ay kayang makamit na walang dahas. Basta't magkaisa tayong lahat.
Masdan ang nagaganap sa aming bayan. Nagkasama ng mahirap at mayaman. Kapit-bisig madre, pari, at sundalo. Naging Langit itong bahagi ng mundo.
Huwag muling payagang umiral ang dilim. Tinig ng bawat tao'y bigyan ng pansin. Magkakapatid lahat sa Panginoon. Ito'y lagi nating tatandaan. (repeat refrain two times)
Coda: Mapayapang paraang pagbabago. Katotohanan, kalayaan, katarungan. Ay kayang makamit na walang dahas. Basta't magkaisa tayong lahat!
Cheers to "pilipinasmabuhay100" for the above video and lyrics.
It's 2:00 PM and I just woke up and extremely hungry. It's been a gruelling week -- working 3 days and 3 night 12-hour shifts is just not that fun. This song kinda gets me in that feel-good zone. Helps me get through those tight spots. :)
Stick it the man! Yeah! Hahaha! :)) Uh ahem... Right, umm... Moving on.....
Endeverafter - No More Words
I got a sharp stick, I keep in my pocket I speak volumes never utter a word When you strike a match, a fire will happen But the line between the smoke and the flames get blured
Don't you see the writing on the wall(Don't you see the writing on the wall) You're in way over your head You're gonna drown in the things that you said
Time has come and gone for words A thousands threats I've heard before But words are cheap, but lies are faint to me
Time has come and gone for words A thousands threats I've heard before And all your words are too big to take
It's a paradox, A mystery, A riddle A door in your face and only I have the key Do understand, you'll be caught in the middle Caught in a web by being spun by me
Don't you see the writing on the wall (Don't you see the writing on the wall) Just a victim of your own conceit The architect of your own defeat
Time has come and gone for words A thousands threats I've heard before But words are cheap, but lies are meant faint to me
Time has come and gone for words A thousands threats I've heard before And all your words are too big to take
Never walk away from a fight that's worth fighting Never hesitate when you know you're gonna act Never waste your words on a fool who won't listen Never sell your soul cause you'll never buy it... back
Time has come and gone for words A thousands threats I've heard before But words are cheap, but lies are faint to me
Time has come and gone for words A thousands threats I've heard before And all your words are too big to take
Time has come and gone for words A thousands threats I've heard before But words are cheap, but lies are faint to me
Time has come and gone for words A thousands threats I've heard before And all your words are too big to take
Note: Yeah, this is the entrance song of WWE Superstar Jeff Hardy -- one of the best high flyers in wrestling of all time.
In case you want the Jeff hardy Titantron video, check this out. It's repetitive though. The video loops after every 15 seconds or so...
