To do list for the last 10 days of work... and after

Ten more days and officially I'm unemployed again. It's not a necessarily a bad thing...

I needed a break anyway. After the insane work coupled with some not-so-helpful and I-will-drag-you-down-with-me colleagues, I few weeks relaxing is exactly just what I need.

Of course, I can't help wondering what to do next. After a while, a few weeks of doing nothing but relaxing will slowly become depressing... Been there, done that; Longest time I was unemployed was about three months...

Anyway, aside from the important to-do things (like tying up loose ends and, uhm, looking for work!), I've been thinking it over for some time and here's what I've come up so far:

  • Study for certification. In my previous job, all of us aimed for it for better compensation. The only thing holding us back was money; paying USD150 for a single exam is not exactly cheap. Since moving here, though, I guess we have more than enough to pursue this. Just need enough time to study and brush up on some topics.

  • Lose weight... a lot of it. Desk jobs tend to build up fat. I still do some legwork, but not enough to keep my weight down. The place is great here; very wide and very clean -- at least until some residents start picnicking and litter the whole place. 'Might as well enjoy the view while jogging or whatnot. :) I'm targetting, for now, to lose 1kg per week. After I get the hang of it, I'll go for more until I get my ideal weight.

  • Learn to cook. Since getting the Iron Chef episodes again, our desire to cook was rekindled. They're just too fun to watch. It's amazing what dishes they can whip up. I just hope I don't eat to much or I will never lose my excess weight.

  • DIY stuff. There are some projects which I've always wanted to do but couldn't because of work. With it out of the way, I quess I have more than enough time to do them. I've been going through stores like Daiso (where everything is sold for 2sgd) for some items I can use. Oh, well, I better straighten out my DIY project list first. :))

  • Finish a game.I've played many games, but I seldom finish one. When the game is extremely long, the tendency is to forget about it after some time. Yep, work gets in the way! :)) Maybe I'll finish up Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. I'm halfway through the main quest anyway, so I might as well finish it up.

  • Blog! Haven't blog for a while now. Hence, the post. :))Got that writer's block going -- I guess I'm too jaded at work, I can't think straight. :))

That's what I have for now. Any other ideas how I can waste my time? :))

Project aftermath...

Finally, after months of anticipation, the project had come to pass... and we all survived!

This is perhaps the biggest project I am involved in my entire career. I wish I could say that everything was smooth sailing, but that would be a lie.

So our team were there on site at 10:30 AM last Saturday, but people were already behind schedule; we could not start unless the first team has finished their task. All preliminary tasks on our side have been done, so all that was left was to wait for the other team to finish their task. So we waited patiently... And waited... And waited some more.

Around 3:30PM, that's when we had our first issue. Easily resolved, no sweat.

About 30 minutes later, then came the seemingly never-ending parade of issues... We had a list pasted on a wall were all the problems / issues encountered are listed. For the next 2 minutes, 10 issues are listed and there were no signs of it letting up. Thankfully it did stop, but there were already too much on the list and we were stuck with these problems for the next hours.

Bottomline, we finally called it a day around 2:30 AM. Workarounds were in place, although there are a couple more unresolved issues. We had to come back the following day. (Or technically, later that day since it's past midnight.)

We returned to work around the 11 AM, refreshed but not as eager as we were the previous day. Thankfully, all of the outstanding issues have been resolved around 3:00PM. Finally! We went home very elated that the project is finished.

While sitting in front of the TV, I realized a couple of things; first, I'm watching "Sunday" shows which means it's already Sunday; and, second, we have to go back to work the following day (to provide support in case problems do occur during normal production hours). I feel shortchanged. If you look at it, we would be working for twelve days straight (the 10 normal working days in two weeks plus the two weekends). Aint exactly your ideal scenario!

So today we returned, still not very enthusiastic. Problems did occur but thankfully these were resolved easily. We would be staying put for the rest of the week to ensure that any and all incidents are dealt with.

Aside from that, I had to update all the documents that are affected by the changes. Aside from the two documents I created for this project, my boss assigned me to update five other documents affected. I know for a fact that nobody is assigned to update one other document, so I plan to do that as well.

All in all, just another fine week. :)

Countdown to a monster project!

Although it was not my intention, I let this blog hanging again for a week without any posts. :( Due to the big project I'm involved with, I didn't have enough time to spare to do much of anything except do my tasks and keeping my sanity intact...

Good news is, aside from one minor task (which hopefully I can delegate to the other project members who are free), all of the prep work that I needed to do is finished. That should give me enough room this week to do, among other things, blog, play and have fun!

Not that I'm not having fun during last week. For the first time in this job, the end of the week was rewarding for me; well, rewarding technically. I've managed to setup a server switch -- a Cisco Catalyst 6000 -- in the live/production network and is ready for use. Providing tech support or doing configurations on a lab setup is one thing; actually configuring it on your own in production is another.

Also, as I've said, I've been working hard to keep my brain still intact. I've been continuing my Baldur's Gate II game as well. I'm planning on using a different character next time I play it. Also, I have been beefing up Che's Nintendo Dual Screen (NDS). Thanks to youtube and internet, I've tweaked the R4DS. Maybe I'll post a separate entry for the NDS customization.

Here's hoping to a smooth week!

Trudging work with streaming radio

In case you didn't know, my job isn't exactly what I thought it was. The process (or lack thereof) definitely has room for improvement. A pseudo-team (one team leader and one team member) simply does not work for me. The organizational hierarchy is also bad, since any higher-ups can assign work to us without going through the team leader. Plus, the escalation of issues practically does not exist; most of the time, the issue goes directly to manager instead of us. (I guess, coming from a "real" technical support job, I can see clearly that the "escalation" procedure is -- well, let's just say it could use a major overhaul.... :) On top of it all, our projects are there and we get constant pings from the same manager who assigns multiple "very urgent" (but mostly trivial) tasks.

Oh well, enough of the rants... :)

Ever since my last job, I simply work better with music on. Back then, it was cellphone radios and earphones. Now, I can use that, but then again, I can only pick up SG radio stations. :( They're not THAT bad, but I comes down to cultural preferences, I guess.. Example, I just don't get a kick out of any Chinese, Malaysian, or Indian songs which get played as much as the English songs we know.

So, it's got to be internet radio! Unlike other companies here, it's a good thing that streaming (audio or video) is not blocked. Although there are days when it gets disconnected, mostly due to network issues. (They should really replace some of the devices here!) If streaming were blocked, I don't know how I would keep myself sane. Radio helps me relax back then. It's helping me relax now... or at least entertained enough to get through the day. :)

I listen to RX most of the time. :) That's were I get my daily dose of songs and news -- entertainment or otherwise. Keeps me updated on latest hits. (Che was really happy to know that Say It Again topped the top charts.)

Sadly, I don't get to work that early, so I can only hear the last hour of Chico and Delamar. I could go to work earlier, but then again, why the hell should I? :)

Okay, back to "work"! Hehehe :)

Phew! Surviving April...

Finally! After an extended hiatus from blogging, I'm back!! Well, sort of...

While many Filipino students had or were preparing for graduation day, Singaporean kids are preparing for the start of the school year. Hence, after a couple months of minimal activity, the campus network would be getting a real workout.

Much has happened this April at work, that -- I guess -- pushed me to the limit. :(

We had at least two big network downtimes at least two more which affected computer laboratories. On top of these, the big boss gave me a a lot of trivial things to check such as Yahoo! Messenger not having transparent proxy, or a particular person not being able to VPN into the network from home.

Then of course there's the big network server migration coming this June. I had to map each of the hundred plus servers to the corresponding switch ports -- manually! If the lack of documentation was not enough, I had no consistent information about the server hostnames and IP addresses (they change these too often), ARP tables of most switches are imcompleteso I had to rely on MAC addresses, which means I have to ask the server owners to provide that information since I don't have access to any of these servers.

Then there's me getting "lectured" for not updating in a timely manner all of the big boss's trivial follow-ups and what-not.

My colleague said that I should not take my job seriously. If I let everything in my work affect me, there's no way you I can survive another six months.

[Oh yeah, end of April marks my sixth month in this job! Yipee! Six more to go!]

Anyway, the thing is, my work already has affected me. In my last job, it was easier to "change hats". When I'm in the office, I work hard. When work's done for the day, I leave everything behind in the office. After I leave the office, I'm a husband, a friend, or whatever -- just not a stressed office worker. I leave the work and the stress behind. I don't even think of work when I'm with my friends, with Che, or with the rest of our family.

But now, I can't help but think of work. I had to bring home the laptop they provided me so I can work from home. I brought home the stress. I get full six hourse of sleep (longer than what I used to back in Philippines) but still restless when I wake up.

Point is, my colleague's right. This is exactly what I told Che a few years ago when she was stressed with her job. Don't soak everything that's thrown your way -- let it slide off your back. So what if you can't meet the SLA? So what if you can't meet the deadline? What'd they do? Fire me? They'd be doing me a favor! At least I wouldn't have to pay the bond AND I get my freedome back! :)

So many lessons learned. The support structure and processes suck and that's the reason people leave this job whenever they can. Work attitude here is very different from what I'm used to. No choice but to adapt. Bossses want their money's worth. Technically-challenged users shout because they are too stupid to do know anything else. Blame game is the common work attitude -- someone's gotta fall and take all the hits for whatever problems encountered. I'm still thinking of ways how I can curb this away from me when I'm the duty engineer as well as how I can use this to my advantage. Hehehe... Plans, motives, conspiracy... the plot thickens.. hahaha :)

Blogging has been therapeutic for me. I want to post more regardless of the heavy workload. And I want to post less work and more life outside work. Enough about work. It's a new month, and it's my month, I might add. A new beginning of sorts for me. :)

That's it for this post. New goal: post something other than work. Hehehehe :))

Beat It!

Almost another week has passed without any posts! Hehehe, it's been very busy the last few days. :)

Somehow, the song was very appropriate for my mood about work. Hehehe.. A very angry angry angry song! Hahaha! :)

Fall Out Boy feat John Mayer - Beat It

They told him don't you ever come around here
Don't wanna see your face, you better disappear
The fire's in their eyes and their words are really clear
So beat it, just beat it

You better run, you better do what you can
Don't wanna see no blood, don't be a macho man
You wanna be tough, better do what you can
So beat it, but you wanna be bad

Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants to be defeated
Showin' how funky strong is your fight
It doesn't matter who's wrong or right
Just beat it, beat it
Just beat it, beat it

Just beat it, beat it
Just beat it, beat it

They're out to get you, better leave while you can
Don't wanna be a boy, you wanna be a man
You wanna stay alive, better do what you can
So beat it, just beat it

You have to show them that you're really not scared
You're playin' with your life, this ain't no truth or dare
They'll kick you, then they beat you,
Then they'll tell you it's fair
So beat it, but you wanna be bad

Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants to be defeated
Showin' how funky strong is your fight
It doesn't matter who's wrong or right

Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants to be defeated
Showin' how funky strong is your fight
It doesn't matter who's wrong or right
Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it

Beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants to be defeated
Showin' how funky strong is your fight
It doesn't matter who's wrong or right

Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants to be defeated
Showin' how funky strong is your fight
It doesn't matter who's wrong or who's right

Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants to be defeated
Showin' how funky strong is your fight
It doesn't matter who's wrong or right

Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants to be defeated
Showin' how funky strong is your fight
It doesn't matter who's wrong or right
Just beat it, beat it
Beat it, beat it, beat it

The April Fool!

How fitting is it, that today is April Fool's Day and I feel that I've just been made a fool of?

It's him! The pasa-loader once again! It's not enough that he's not here to take responsibility for a task he screwed up, now I have to pick up the pieces and I have to fix everything while being under a microscope...

The pasa-loader's task (another SSL certificate installation) was submitted about three weeks ago, and the servers needing that certificate need it by tomorrow for testing. So NATURALLY, the server admin only complained today, the day before the testing day. This server admin, complaining that task was submitted weeks before, escalated the issue to his boss. Now his boss is "making noise" (as what they call it) to our boss (i.e., boss of pasa-loader and me).

Now, since pasa-loader is on sick leave for two weeks now (some form of measles or something), guess who takes the heat? Come on, three guesses only, don't be shy. Take a guess... Yep, yours truly. Soooooo...................................

Here I come to save the day!
(mighty mouse and friends, are on their way... hehehe)

So that's what I've been doing since this morning until just about half an hour ago... I didn't even have time to eat breakfast. Oh well... I resolved it eventually but it was extremely stressful... It's cold in the office (aircon was set to 22 degrees C), but I didn't feel it at all. Actually, I felt sweat beading on my forehead and on my back. I had a monster headache while trying to figure out this damn thing.

Now that I've had some time to sit down and ponder on the events this morning, here are a few things that have been bugging me:

(1) Why is it that every time pasa-loader takes a vacation or sick leave, we get in trouble? It's like he always has a surprise for us whenever he's not around; unfinished and long overdue tasks, irate clients, admins and/or bosses, things like that...

(2) Since the afformentioned task is three-weeks old, why did no one (the pasa-loader or the server admin) test it then? Why wait until the DAY BEFORE the deadline to do the test? It's THEIR responsibility to test it. Now this friggin' service admin has the gall to complain?

Damn bastard!

Whoops sorry... Slipped out... I'm not angry... *chanting while jumping* I'm in a happy place... I'm in a happy place... I'm in a happy place... I'm in a happy place.......

(3) Is it coincidence that today is April Fools Day? I mean really... Why do I feel duped? It's as if this was a big setup? Like they planned this big friggin' problem and dump this on me on this very specific day?

Well whatever... It's fixed. It's done.

An engineer's struggle with lupus...

The person here, Leslie, is actually one of my former colleagues in my previous job in the Philippines. I think it was about a month after I left for Singapore when I learned that she left that company as well. Before that, though, she was already out on sick leave for a few months. Sadly, it was lupus. :(

She's one of two people who got lupus from that same company. Don't know about you but there's something definitely wrong in this company... Could be the environment, could be the other people, could be the actual work itself. Whatever the case, no one's happy with illnesses that are (most likely) triggered by work stress...

Good luck to you....

Busy Thursday

I've never been busy like this since I was the duty network engineer for the entire December '07. I've been away my desk for most of the time, much even less time to do the usual blogging and Internet surfing... Oh well, it's one of those days... Or rather, one of those weeks...

Well, it's not like I had a good time during Holy Week last time I was in the Philippines. Holiday or not, as long as it is a day between a Monday and Friday, we go. Here at least, we don't have to go this Good Friday. :)

Particularly busy was this Maundy Thursday. With this being the last day before the upcoming event this Monday -- the campus will be holding a laptop configuration event thingy for all the students; lucky kids! -- everyone was scrambling to get all things ready.

Sadly, though, someone has messed up the configs of some switches (someone deleted the damn VLANs) causing all the test laptops connected to it to be disconnected. Well, at least that was easily resolved once the "damage" was seen from the switch-side. I had to go to the switch, though, which was holed up in a a very small, cramped, and somewhat smelly room.

I wanted to find out what the hell happened that the switches got messed up! Oh well... Too tired to track down the who, the how, or the why of it all.

Earlier...
So let's see... I had to carry a switch from my place to the event site which was about five buildings away. I had to get the keys from the other support center which was another two buildings away. The switch is not that heavy -- just a small 48-port switch... I think it was a Cat3750... Well, doesn't matter.

When we're done with the event, I'll play around with the switch for a little while... Better to experiment and do tests on spare switches than the ones in production.

There were also these three switches in computer laboratory which cannot be accessed remotely via CiscoWorks servers, telnet, or SSH... Well, okay SSH will not work for two of those which are the old Cisco Catalyst 3500XL switches. Still, it's getting in the way of me getting rid of my three-month-old task of upgrading the IOS images of all the hundreds of devices in the network -- did I mention they have hundreds of devices? Hehe...

Hmm, I actually learned a great deal about that... Maybe I'll post it on my other blog.

Blasted Notebook!

My office notebook/laptop is broken. The blasted thing can't get any power; I removed the battery then connected the power supply -- no good. I used the power supply of one of my colleagues here -- still no good. We know that it's not a problem on the two power supplies since we can use either on other laptops (same model and brand of course).

Good thing I at least managed to backup all of my work into a portable hard drive before the laptop lost all power. It was actually quite a race; I had to backup almost a gigabyte of data, while I'm seeing the bloody "empty battery" indicator flashing in the corner. I managed to save it before the battery was totally drained. Note: at full capacity, even if the battery/power indicator says it can survive for 4 hours, it can actually only just last about an hour... I guess that comes with the age; the laptop the company provided me is several years old.

We're pretty sure it's a power connector issue or something on the laptop. I checked with our service hotline who then contacted the laptop vendor since it's still under warranty. Then, the vendors called me up saying that since no replacement parts are available, they had to order it overseas and it will arrive in about 2 to 3 weeks!

If only I could wait that long. Oh well... I verified with them if they can just loan me another laptop, transfer my harddisk there, then use it until my laptop is fixed. I'll follow up with them tomorrow...

So in the meantime, I had more than enough time to fix my workplace; cleaned out the drawers, organized the shelves, even fastened loose notes into a single bundle. I also managed to find an old and unused 2007 organizer underneath the tons of debris. not much use in organizing since it's about a year too late, although now I at least have a decent-looking writing pad whenever I attend meetings. :) Hehe

Hopefully, I can get another laptop soon; I still have about a dozen tasks to do and no laptop to use. :(

Sleepy, rainy week...

It's been raining everyday for almost a week now. Since then, I've always been late. Most of the times, it's just below the five-minute mark. There are times, though, when I was late for almost 15 minutes. I usually arrive before my boss does, but when you're 15 minutes late, well, you really can't expect your boss not to be there (he's not the type who arrives an hour late then leaves an hour early).

Anyway, I guess it's not that much, but for someone like me who has incurred less than 5 instances of tardiness in my entire five-year-stay in my last job, this is a gargantuan leap.

I guess it's my fault anyway, since I always stay up past 12 midnight everyday. And the temperature brought about by the cold, rainy weather is not helping me to wake up sooner as well!

Anyway, since I don't wake up early enough, I no longer get my free copy of Today in the MRT station! I don't get to have my daily dose of news. Oh well...

If only I could sleep in the office. It's very conducive to sleep, with the aircon set to around 24 degrees C. Not sure, though, if it's colder here in the office or outside; it's raining like a cold day in hell now.

Maybe I'll just get some shut-eye immediately after I get home today. Assuming I get home early that is. :) For the meantime, I think I'll just continue with my work as best as I can, *yawn* or blog away, or just chat, *yawn* or email, whatever to keep me awake.....*zzzzzzzzzzzz*

Information overload!!!!

So many projects, so few people, so little time... Damn!

We have just finished our training earlier for setting up student notebooks / laptops for the upcoming school year. Just when I thought I have everything set, the big boss sends a message saying that I will be involved in another project!

Oh well, I'll know more when I meet with him tomorrow...

I feel like I'm starting to forget everything that I've learned. Sure, it took me about two months to forget everything I learned in colleage (LOL!), but I have no desire to lose everything I learned from my previous company! That's almost five years worth of knowledge and experience...

In light of this dilemma, I'm thinking of maybe logging online anything I can remember from my last jobs as well as everything I learn from my current one. Maybe another blog or something. I think I just need a name and know which publisher I should use.

Any ideas? I'd really appreciate your help! Thanks!

Signs to reconsider your job

I'm pretty sure most -- if not all -- experience burnout at work at some point. When this happens, that's a signal for you to get away from the stress and take a breather... Time to regroup, relax, recollect your thoughts, whatever it is you do to cope with work-related stress.

There are, however, times in which there is just too much stress, your mind and body literally -- and I mean LITERALLY -- cannot take it anymore: lose sleep, lose weight, cannot focus, miss appointments, etc. I guess that's a big billboard saying "CHANGE WORK", "LEAVE COMPANY", etc.

From my experience, the signs that you must look for a new job include, but is not limited to, the following. (Well, you know, work-related stress may have caused me to miss a few points! LOL)

You excessively dislike people at work. In particular, whenever you hear the name or the voice of someone -- your colleague, a boss, or a subordinate -- you have an involuntary response that equates to irritation; your ears twitching, your mouth making that funny shape, one of your eyebrows rising, your eyes roll up, your face frowning, your hands clenching, your feet stomping, etc. Little things like that betray your negative feelings toward that other person.

It is normal to dislike some people at work; there are an infinite number of personalities, some of them -- or some aspects of them -- would likely not be compatible to yours. Hence, you will come across these people at some point.

What's bad is the degree / level of annoyance to that people. How many people do you dislike? How often do you deal with these people daily? Do they consume your thoughts? Are you thinking of many dark and different ways of flaying their flesh and rending their bones? Hehehe.. Okay, I may have gone a little bit overboard, but you get the point right?

Another thing is that your hostility for these people have changed you; could be as simple and subtle as turning away your head slughtly whenever you hear something you don't like , or as apparent and obvious as swearing obscenities when normally you wouldn't.

You compromise your friends/family. How many times have we seen a scene in which the working parent would miss his/her kid's recital, first game, graduation, whatever, all because of work? I remember this ad on the papers the other day: a working mom promised her kid a picnic the next day; then he got called by her boss who wanted her to do extra work on that same picnic day. What do you do?

Sometimes, there really is a need to do some extra work, hence requiring you to sacrifice some time that you would rather spend enjoying with your family and/or friends. The question is, how many times have you sacrificed your time for them for the sake of your job? Between work and family, where do you draw the proverbial line??

You have nightmares about work. If you dream about it, that means your job is ingrained in your subconscious so deeply, that it has become a part of you. Now that's not necessarily bad; that is, if you dream about the "good" stuff of your work or if you dream something that would make you suddenly wake and shout "EUREKA! I've found it!" or something, that's all fine and dandy. This is bad, however, if all you dream about are the stress and the other "nightmarish" part of work. You'll be more restless and susceptible to stress, which gets absorbed into your subconscious, then you dream more about it and it goes on and on and on in a vicious, seemingly never-ending cycle.

Personally, good or bad, I just want to leave work in the office altogether. When the clock strikes 5:30PM, by 5:31PM I should be already be on my way home. I won't let the work consume me beyond that time, unless there is really a need to extend.

You unintentionally miss your lunch and breaktimes. You are rooted in your seat so much that you lose track of time. By the time you remember you have to eat, you have already lost your appetite. Since you haven't eaten, you have even less energy and patience to resist stress and you will burnout that much sooner.

BTW, others see that missing eating times as a good way of saving money... Oh, come on!!!! Whatever you save on food will be spent on your hospitalization/treatments for your ulcer... or worse! So please... Unless you are a creature that doesn't have to eat anything, buy some food, okay?

You cannot focus on your work. You are at your desk, facing your monitor, your tasks for the day is lined up, and you know what to do. And yet, for some reason, you just sit there, stare at the monitor while there are a dozen ideas going on in your 'noggin, but still you have not done or accomplished any of those tasks.

Your brain is probably overloaded with a lot of information. Think of a PC reaching 100% CPU utilization; the PC appears to hang for a while. You are this PC! And your CPU is working overtime such that you appear to be hung, not able to do anything until some time has passed.

So what have you been thinking of, that has got 100% of your brain worked up?

You get a severe/critical health condition. This seems far-fetched, an exaggeration to emphasize effects of too much work; I just wish that this was indeed the case. :( Unfortunately, there really are STRESS-triggered ailments; I know of at least two people who have been affected so severely, they developed irreversible health problems.

This is perhaps the ultimate culmination of the effect of stress and burnout in your body. Don't wait for this to happen to you, okay?

If you are in this situation, either get rid of your condition (if possible), or change your work (change the working conditions, or leave the company outright).

These are all I can think of right now. I know I have missed a few points, but I think this post is long enough. :)

And the week flies by

I've been so busy , I didn't realize it's been almost a week since I last blogged here. I guess time flies when you're having fun but time flies much faster when you're working hard and under pressure.

Geez, and just like that, the half of the day is over and I'm still knee-deep with undone tasks. Oh well, better get back to work.

Calm before the storm

Just found out that the reason I haven't received any network tasks since yesterday was because of the fact that the task "assigner" IS on leave since yesterday. He'll be back tomorrow, Thursday. So just how many tasks have been left hanging since Tuesday???

In addition, the big boss sent an email advising to "avoid and hold back any network configuration changes with immediate effect till Friday morning."

So let's see... One bloody network task on Monday, none for Tuesday until Thursday. That means whatever tasks have piled up between Tuesday and Thursday, I'll have to do on Friday!

Ah geez.. Looks like I'll be working hard for my money this Friday...

Now on call

Starting yesterday and for the rest of December, I'll be the duty network engineer, which means I'll take charge of all network-related problems and requested changes ( which for the most part, this involves opening of certain ports between VLANs). The emergency hotline was even forwarded to my cellphone.

Too bad for me, my first service request involves a very large project which requires configuration of several different switches. I just finished it today, sometime before lunch. It's currently being checked by the requester. I hope no further problems are encountered so I can close this one out.

Ah well... Here's to hoping for a month of lesser problems! Advanced Merry Christmas!

Nailed two tasks!

I've been busy for most of the week, having two emergency tasks hounding me for the last two days. Both are network down issues which rendered one classroom (yeah, some classrooms require networked PCs) and one notebook (NB) support center useless.

The classroom issue, after checking the Cat6500 switch module, was determined to be a hardware issue. It's actually easy, since I can't do much of anything here unless the replacement arrived - bad thing is, my team lead kept the pressure on, which is understandable, since all classes in that room for that day -- there were about 8 in all -- had to be rescheduled or lined up on the other working classrooms.

The NB support center issue was more troublesome for several reasons; perhaps the most significant being that these devices can only be accessed via console. No remote access, so I had to go down one floor, move around the tables to open the backside (lol!) of the wiring cabinet, attach the console cable. Someone apparently has messed up the configs since none of the supposed username/passwords worked.

By the afternoon, things started to swing in my favor again; I managed to recover the password and fix the config (by copying over the config of the twin device, which I had to recover the password manually as well). Shortly after that, the replacement module for the classroom issue arrived as well. After about 30 minutes waiting for the vendor technician to remove and replace the module and all the attached ports, problem solved!

Although I still have two outstanding tasks, it's a good feeling, having accomplished something after a stessful week. It's been a while since I last had this great sense of achievement since my last job. I just hope I fare much much better once I'm the duty Network Engineer this Monday. Ach!

Gloomy first day at work

While the Philippines is having the Baranggay Elections, I had my first day at work. It's a very large campus consisting of around 25+ buildings, 5 foodcourts, library -- everything. It's like UP Diliman, only much bigger and and a rougher (mountainous) terrain; Level1 on one side of a building is like Basement1 or Level 2 on its other side (depends on which building you are looking at). So it gets tough when you need to run and work on some issues on the far-end of the campus -- like what we just did!

The rain did not help make it any easier, either. Hehe

Well, back to work. While the rest of the Philippines will be having lots of holidays this week, I'll be spending most of my time here at my desk, sifting through the files and other tasks that I have to do. :)

Landfills kill the land around Metro Manila

I guess Saturday mornings with heavy rain is conducive for reading news online. Here's another news article about the new landfill in Rizal.

I've never been a fan of landfills. It's never a good, long-term solution to garbage. I mean, you are not actually "disposing" the garbage; you're simply "collecting" them in one humongous pit, land which could have otherwise been used more effectively -- housing, farmland, even malls, whatever. Landfills are practically worthless and it also lowers the land value of all the lands around it as well. Not a very wise decision, if you ask me.

I've played SimCity 3000 (yes the old "3000" version one) since it came out years ago. One of the main goals I target there is to have incinerators in the city for two reasons (1) it eliminates garbage problem of my city in no time, and (2) it generates tons of money (neighboring cities send their garbage for a price to my city to dispose of it). The problem, of course, is air pollution. So, I configured the city to develop "environment-friendly technologies". It takes some time, though, and the air pollution is not totally eliminated. Well, I had to chose between air pollution (money-generating incinerators) and garbage/land pollution (land-value-lowering landfills). I always go for the air pollution. :-)

Not sure if it's applicable in the real-world scenario though. What do you think? :-)

No OTYs!

After a few months, I just realized that I haven't stayed for OTY (for the unfamiliar, that's Over-Time Thank You i.e., no pay) in the office since June this year! I guess the fact that I'm in the most challenging and stressful team in MANILA TAC does not prevent me from becoming a 4:31er just like the good old NMS days.

No trainings, no backlogs pending on me, no pending reviews... Well, actually there are cases that are pending on me but once it hits 4:30 PM, I stop. I simply stop working. I'm not paid, so why bother, right?

It's not that I'm not enjoying my job or that I'm very lazy or that I'm not enthusiastic about my job. I guess I'm just better at maximizing my time nowadays. Here are some things that I think helps in my job:

- update all of my pending jobs and tasks every 2 days (never let a job reach 3 days or more without any updates)

- do the easy tasks first; I guess it has something to do with a sense of achievement; everytime I update a simple task (a short phone or email update), I achieve something. Sure it's a small thing, but say I do that for all of my 15 tasks, hey, not bad. Before the middle of my shift, I would have finished all 15, giving me more time to work on the other tasks at hand such as the new cases I have just accepted or reviewing the cases of my juniors.

Ah well.. I better enjoy this while it lasts.
